Linking on Apple Macs

(Note the only way to safely run TypeWell on an Apple Mac computer is to use the Parallels virtualization software.)

Here are instructions for setting up Parallels on a Mac to allow TypeWell linking.  Use the appropriate section below.  The first method works on any version, including the newest.  The second and older method has advantages but only works on versions prior to 2008.

For all versions of Parallels and OSX

  1. Find the Parallels Devices menu.

  2. Find Network Adapter 1 on the menu.

  3. Choose Bridged Networking and under that choose Airport.  Now Windows is hooked up to the Mac's Airport wireless device.

  4. Click the Mac Airport icon at the top right of the Mac desktop.  The icon is the one that looks like sound waves going upward.

  5. Choose Create Network.

  6. Enter the SSID name of your typewell network, per step 9 of our wireless instructions for your version of Windows: either Windows XP or Windows 7 or Vista

  7. Leave the Channel as Automatic, and leave the Require Password box unchecked since we don't typically use a password with TypeWell networks.

  8. Click OK.  The Mac side is all set up to connect to the TypeWell network.  Only one more thing so Windows uses it correctly.
  9. Go into Windows and go to the Network Connections dialog.  One way to get here is to choose My Network Connections from the Start menu, and then View network connections.  This will contain an entry that says something like Parallels Adapter.

  10. Right-click on the Parallels Adapter icon, and choose Properties.

  11. Set the IP address in the Internet Protocol/TCP section, as described in step 12 of the our wireless instructions for Windows.

  12. Now everything is set!  your Airport connects to the TypeWell network, and Windows is set to use the Airport.  Note that you will not be able to access the Internet from your Mac while in this mode.  See the next step.

  13. When you are done using TypeWell and want to connect to the Internet instead, go to the Airport menu and choose Turn Airport Off.  Then immediately go to the Airport menu again and choose Turn Airport On. The Mac will connect back to the regular internet if there is a WiFi network available at your location.

Remember, you'll have to manually do steps 5-8 above each time you want to switch your network to TypeWell mode.  Unfortunately with the system won't remember your TypeWell network and will revert to regular Internet whenever the computer goes to sleep.

Older instructions, for pre-2009 configurations

The instructions above should work on any version.  However, if you have an older Mac with an older copy of Parallels, the following is an easier-to-work-with method.
  1. Put Parallels in desktop mode if it's not already, so that you can see Parallels controls on the margins.

  2. Find the Network icon near the bottom right margin of Parallels, and open it.

  3. Choose Network Adapter 1, Bridged Ethernet, and set to en1: Airport/Wireless Adapter.  This lets Windows take over the Mac's wireless radio.

  4. Switch to Windows running under Parallels.

  5. Configure Windows under Parallels for TypeWell as described for your version of Windows under Parallels: either Windows XP or Windows 7 or Vista.  Where the instructions mention the wireless network, it'll be called the "Parallels Network" on the Mac.

  6. Do NOT change the network configuration under OS X -- only configure the Parallels options and the settings within Windows under Parallels.  If done correctly you'll still be able to access the Internet from OS X as usual when Parallels is not running.

That's it!  Now, whenever you run Windows under Parallels, it'll take over the wireless radio to allow TypeWell linking.  Shut down Parallels to restore the wireless to Mac control to allow you to access the Internet again.
