The information in this page is for people who are considering using TypeWell for access to what others say in classes and meeting. Students from 5th grade through graduate school are potential TypeWell readers. People in work and social meetings, as well as people in religious services can also benefit from TypeWell's real-time speech-to-text communication access. Anyone who needs help to perceive what others are saying, in any setting, is a potential TypeWell reader.
What is TypeWell?
TypeWell is a learning tool that helps many students do better in school.
TypeWell is a communication access tool that helps many individuals participate more fully in work and social meetings and in religious services, by giving them access to what others are saying.
With TypeWell, a hearing transcriber types out the information
spoken by instructors and students in classes, and by presenters and others in meetings and services. As a student or other reader, you can read
these typed words on a small computer screen, right next to
you in class or at the meeting. This text helps many students and others follow what is
happening in classes and meetings better than with only a hearing aid or FM
system. After the class or meeting, the transcriber
can give you a copy of the notes. You can study these notes
after class or have them as reference for what happened in the meeting. These notes could come to you printed on paper, in
an email, on a USB key or CD, or on a floppy disk.

How can TypeWell help a student in school?
TypeWell real-time transcripts, many students are surprised about how much happens
in class. Before they had a transcriber, they thought the instructor just
didn't explain things well enough. They knew students were talking, but
they did not know their comments were important to hear.
Having a
transcriber in class can help you know what is going on during class
-- more easily and more completely. You will also
have notes of the content information the instructor presents in
class. These things can help you learn more, and get better
grades -- if you use them well.

What do I have to do if I get TypeWell services?
As a student, your responsibility is to use the service
responsibly -- look at the computer screen during class or meeting when you need
information, pick up the notes in a timely fashion, use the notes to
study as needed. It is important to be polite to the
transcriber, but remember that he or she is NOT a tutor or aide for you. You may
type questions or comments you wish the transcriber to voice for your to the instructor or presenter.
However, do not ask the transcriber to explain
information from the class or meeting. You are responsible for
making sure the spelling of all vocabulary words in the transcripts is
correct. The transcriber makes the best effort to get
the spelling of new vocabulary correct, but the final responsibility
is yours.
